The excitement of riding in Svaneti, in just one word, is “authentic.” You ride the trails the locals use when tending to cattle or hunting with horses, which are part of everyday life in households. The gear you’ll use is the same as what the owners use for their daily tasks. How much closer to the real thing can you get?

Local horses differ from the large, elegant animals seen in races. They are short, reliable, intelligent, and possess great stamina, making them excellent at navigating tricky trails. You only need to hold on and enjoy the stunning scenery.

You don’t need to be an experienced rider for these tours. It’s an excellent opportunity to try riding! The mountainous trails are not suitable for galloping, so the tours are mostly at a walking pace. In some areas, you may need to dismount and lead the horse, especially downhill on slippery paths. However, local horses are adept at finding the best routes.

Day 1: Acclimatization and Becho Waterfalls

After breakfast, we set off to the Dolra valley in Becho community, located right under Mount Ushba. This beautiful, wide valley is full of trails and sights. We will start with a shorter trail to help you acclimatize to the horses, mountain air, and altitude. The horses will take you to the foot of Shdugvra waterfalls, the biggest waterfall system in Georgia. Overnight in Becho.

Day 2: Baki Pass, Alpine Lake, and Archangel’s Church

Meziri is an alpine meadow over Becho with a lake and a 10th-century church dedicated to Archangel Michael. The meadow offers a spectacular view of Ushba and the Svaneti Range. We will ride to Baki pass to glimpse into the neighboring valley where Etseri community is located. From the pass, you can also see the previous day's waterfalls and the Mkheri church, which we will visit on a future ride. Return to Becho for an overnight stay.

Day 3: Ushba

This is one of the most panoramic horseback riding trails in Svaneti, allowing you to get as close to Ushba as possible without climbing. The path starts at the Guli river, then ascends through a mixed forest to a small forest lake and shepherds’ huts, reaching alpine pastures under Ushba’s rocks. You can continue up the ridge to find more alpine lakes and greet “Grandma and Grandpa” rock figures on Ushba’s southern shoulder. After the ride, we transfer to Mestia for a two-night stay.

Day 4: Chalai Waterfalls and Pastures of Mkheri

The Archangel’s Church of Mkheri is a tiny stone building located at 2500 meters above sea level in an alpine meadow overlooking Latali and half of Svaneti. The climb is challenging, but the horseback ride makes it faster and more enjoyable. The church overlooks a magnificent waterfall system, the Chalai falls. The pastures around are rich with flowers and butterflies. Return to Mestia for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Green Ridges and Mount Elbrus

This tour offers fantastic scenery and a rare view of Mount Elbrus in good weather. This is not a regular tourist trail, so it is less crowded. The trail starts in Latali, ascends over the Bali range, and continues into the higher pastures under Ushba. In summer, the meadows are filled with flowers, and the shepherds’ huts contrast beautifully with the sky. The landscape feels like something out of Narnia. Return to Mestia.

Day 6: Short Hike, Cultural Heritage, and Transfer to Ushguli

We will take a break from riding to visit the Zuruldi viewpoint by skilift and enjoy a light hike along the range to admire Ushba. On the way back, we will visit the Mestia museum, one of the best local ethnographic museums. In the afternoon, we drive to Ushguli, a UNESCO site, stopping to see two of Svaneti's oldest churches. Overnight in Ushguli.

Day 7: Shkhara and Its Glacier

On our last day, we will take a short ride to the Shkhara glacier in the morning and tour Ushguli. In the afternoon, we will drive over the Zagaro pass, passing Soviet alpinist training camps Zeskho and Ailama, and descending into Lower Svaneti with its milder climate and lower mountains. The tour ends at your hotel in Kutaisi city.
